When consumers learn that they can purchase gourmet whole bean coffee for between $10 to $18 per pound, then fresh grind and brew at home for significantly less than gourmet coffee companies charge, many see home brewing premium gourmet coffee as luxurious treat. Purchasing a thermos or a large travel mug to take coffee with them from home makes drinking rich, fresh roasted coffee a possibility for about one-seventh the cost of buying that coffee from expensive and crowded coffee shops.

You can enjoy great gourmet coffee more and pay less for the privilege by starting with whole beans and grinding them yourself with a $20 coffee grinder. Make only what you can drink or carry with you in a nice thermos or travel mug instead of reheating coffee later. Use good tasting water and keep your brewing equipment clean to prevent the rancid bitterness that can come from previous grounds in crevices.

Twenty-eight-year-old Anthony Johnson appeared in bond court Wednesday, accused of raping a teenage girl inside a dorm room on the campus of Johnson and Wales University.

Police said Johnson, a seasonal part-time coaching assistant, attacked the 19-year-old while she was visiting a student at a residence hall. Johnson was not working at the time, and the university said he should not have been on campus.

According to the arrest report, on Sunday evening, Johnson entered a dorm room with the teenager and forced her onto the bed, where he proceeded to rape her. The teen said she told Johnson she was a virgin, and it was hurting but he did not stop.

Johnson was subsequently arrested Tuesday.

The university released a statement which read in part: “The alleged incident occurred while the victim was visiting a student residence hall on campus. We immediately contacted the North Miami Police Department who launched an investigation and subsequently arrested Mr. Anthony Johnson in connection with the alleged assault. Mr. Johnson is a seasonal part-time coaching assistant for the campus athletic department. He is not currently coaching and is not allowed on campus. The university is cooperating with the police and is awaiting further information from them.”

Cooking Instructions:

1. In a bowl, blend the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until well-mixed and smooth. Set the mixture aside.
2. Wash, peel, and slice the fruit however you like. I used fresh bananas, strawberries, kiwis, and grapes, but you can use any fruit that would make a good topping. Set the fruit aside.
3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
4. Spray a 12-inch pizza pan with cooking spray. (I didn’t have a pizza pan, so I just used a large baking tray. So my pizza ended up in a rectangular shape.)
5. Bake the crust for 10-12 minutes. The crust should now be a golden brown color. Let the crust cool down for about 10 minutes.
6. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the crust.
7. Arrange the banana slices over the cream cheese. Then arrange the other fruit slices on the pizza, varying colors and shapes.
8. Sprinkle the nuts and raisins over the pizza. I used whole almonds on mine, but you could easily use whole or chopped pecans or pistachios.
9. For an added touch of decadence, heat up some chocolate chips in a small pan on the stove and drizzle the melted chocolate over the pizza. And if you have any chocolate left over, you can have some fondue on the side!
